VSCO Film 06 Review – Before and After Images

VSCO Film 06 Review

Updated May 15th, 2019.

VSCO has discontinued all of their desktop film packs and stopped support. They’re focusing completely on mobile.

I’ve replaced this preset pack in my workflow with presets from Presets.co, you can get 2 free presets at their site.

VSCO released their latest film emulation plugins for Lightroom and ACR today, The Alternative Process Collection. These are very interesting for us as many of our favorite film images are from Portra 160 pushed a stop. These plugins should be very versatile for photographers shooting weddings, elopements, or personal work. This is definitely a popular aesthetic and VSCO seems to have more refined presets with each release.

What is the best VSCO film pack?

VSCO Film 06

Included Films:

  • Fuji 400H+1
  • Kodak E100VS XP
  • Ilford HP5-1
  • Ilford HP5+1
  • Ilford HP5+2
  • Ilford HP5+3
  • Kodak Portra 160+1
  • Kodak Portra 400+1
  • Kodak Portra 400+2
  • Kodak Portra 400+3
  • Kodak Portra 800+1
  • Agfa Precisa XP
  • Fuji Provia 400X XP
  • Fuji Provia 400X+1
  • Fuji Sensia XP
  • Kodak TRI-X-1
  • Kodak TRI-X+1
  • Kodak TRI-X+2
  • Kodak TRI-X+3

*Update* After using these presets for over a year, this has become my favorite VSCO pack. The Portra 160 pushed one stop preset is the base for my import preset that I apply to all of my wedding photography. The Tri-X Pushed Two Stops preset is the base for my black and white. The other films are very fun to play with when looking for different tones. I’d suggest this to anyone looking to buy their first set of VSCO presets.

  1. Love it! These colors and contrast are amazing. This is alsolutely what I need for my engagement shoots and weddings.

  2. Looks good. Curious though, not a big VSCO user but didn’t they already do Portra in VSCO 1&2?

    1. Oh right, I see. Hence the alt process theme. 😛

  3. Wonderful pictures, the new pack looks really beautiful

  4. Great review! Do you guys use Nikon or Canon? My results are so different from yours (I use Canon), and another review I just saw from a Canon user looks more like what I’m getting results wise. I’m wondering if it might have something to do with the profiles for NIkon just looking a little different, or if you shoot Canon, maybe you use the Standard profiles or something?

Thanks for taking the time to post this!

    1. We shoot Canon! There are quite a few variables.. body/lens/light/etc

  5. Hi! Love the look of these 🙂 And thanks for the review! I love your before and after comparisons for the VSCO presets – thanks for doing them again and again! For this set, I can’t get the before and afters to work (the roll-over) to work.

    1. ahhh.. the code broke, we’ll get it fixed shortly 🙂

  6. I just recently discovered VSCO. Trying to decide between Film 05 and film 06. I love these images very much. I saw in your review of 05 you showed the before image before it was edited. Was wondering way you didn’t for this review? Would love to see the unedited version of 06.

  7. My favourite vsco preset pack! Makes my photos less digital

  8. Thank you Dylan. This is a truly amazing and very useful resource for me. I’ve now started using this pack as a result 😉

  9. Haaaa the rollover doesn’t work here! But thanks for the review, it helps!!

  10. Thanks for your review!
I´m still using VSCO till 5, but after your reward i`m interested to get 6, too 😉

  11. This is so interesting to see, how different people have different tastes. There was few Before pictures I liked a lot better than after – assuming before are on right side.

  12. What presets did you replace this pack with? Referring to your latest update* Only see BW presets

    1. Unreleased color presets built on custom profiles, they’ll be out in 3-4 weeks.

  13. Nick Yellows says:

Hi! Thanks for your reviews! I’d like to buy a VSCO Pack for natural and trekking reportage on italian paths. Which pack should I buy? Mostly between 5 and 6, because they are the most interesting after your reviews. Thanks fot your help!

  14. Benedetta says:

thanks Dylan, I was looking for a hint to compare the different packages and your reviews did really help a lot, also because I found the VSCO website difficult to interpret sometimes. I know it might be completely subjective but what do you think is the best package for food photography? Thanks a lot!

  15. Alroy Ndhlovu says:

    Hi there,

I really love the edits. I have the packs but I was wondering that do you shoot with a flat or almost flat profile? Your images look somewhat flat and desaturated.

  16. BUENOS DIAS, DESEO COMPRAR ESTOS PRESETS VSCO 06 , COMO PUEDO COMPRARLOS ? GRACIAS

  17. Thanks a lot for those “Before / After” photos. I was not sure which VSCO set to buy. But now I know which one to get!
    Thanks again.
